Can is American English. Tin is British English. They refer to the same object.

( a packet - a carton ) of rice (Rice usually comes in packages, bags or boxes. A carton contains several smaller containers).
( a bottle - a carton - a can ) of sauce. (Sauce is sold in both bottles and cans).
( a bar - a packet - a carton ) of butter. (Butter is sold by the pound. In America there are four sticks of butter in a box, but we do not say "a box of butter." We call it a pound of butter).

And what is the difference between can and may?
Basically, can means having ability. May gives permission, or expresses possibility.
