The "short" answer is that there is no single correct answer.

You often see these abbreviations without periods, especially in tables and other non-text situations. In formal written text (a full sentence that has the name of the month or day as one of its words), it is standard to write out the full name. If you are abbreviating the word, maybe as part of a more complete date, but it is part of formal text, it is still standard to use the period. In less formal text (maybe like e-mail to a friend), do what seems natural, keeping in mind that the primary goal is for your writing to be easily understood by the intended reader.
