Hi Everybody,
Please check my sentences and explain why they are incorrect.
1) We went for a walk after we finishd cleaning up the kitchen.
2) I forgot to take/taking a book back to the library, so I had to pay a fine.
3) When do you expect to leave on your trip?
4)The baby started talking when she was about eighteen months old.
5) I don't mind to wait for you. Go ahead and finish your work.
6) I've decided staying /to stay here over vacation and painting / to paint my room.
7)We discussed quitting/to quit our jos and opening/to open our own business.
8) I'm getting tired. I need to take some rest.
9) Sometimes students avoid to look at the teacher if they don't want to answer a question.
10) The club members discussed to postpone/ postponing the next meeting until March.
11) Most children prefer to watch television and listen to the radio.
12) My grandmother prefers to read/ reading.
13) Did Carol agree to go camping with you?
14) As the storm approached, the birds quit singing.
15)The taxi driver refused to take/taking a check. he wanted the passenger to pay/paying cash.
16) The soldiers were ordered to stand / standing attention.
17) The travel agent advised us not to wait until August.

1) We went for a walk after we finished cleaning up the kitchen.

2) I forgot to take<strike>/taking</strike> a book back to the library, so I had to pay a fine.

"I forgot to take the book back." = I didn't take the book back because I forgot that I had to do it.
"I forgot taking the book back." = I took the book back, but I couldn't remember that I had done it.

"I remembered to take the book back." = I realized that I had to take the book back, and so I did.
"I remembered taking the book back." = I remember exactly what I did while I took the book back. I'm sure I brought it back.

3) When do you expect to leave on your trip? (OK)

4)The baby started talking when she was about eighteen months old. (OK)

5) I don't mind <strike>to wait</strike> waiting for you. Go ahead and finish your work.

"to mind doing something"

6) I've decided <strike>staying /</strike>to stay here over vacation and <strike>painting /</strike> (to) paint my room.

"to decide to do something"

7)We discussed quitting<strike>/to quit</strike> our jobs and opening<strike>/to open</strike> our own business.

"to discuss/think about/consider doing something"

8) I'm getting tired. I need to take some rest. (OK, or "a rest")

9) Sometimes students avoid <strike>to look</strike> looking at the teacher if they don't want to answer a question.

"to avoid doing something"

10) The club members discussed <strike>to postpone/</strike> postponing the next meeting until March.

11) Most children prefer to watch television and listen to the radio. (OK)

12) My grandmother prefers to read/ reading. (both OK)

13) Did Carol agree to go camping with you? (OK)

14) As the storm approached, the birds quit singing. (OK. to "quit doing something" is considerably more informal than "to stop doing something.")

15)The taxi driver refused to take<strike>/taking</strike> a check. He wanted the passenger to pay<strike>/paying</strike> cash.

16) The soldiers were ordered to stand <strike>/ standing</strike> at attention.

"to order/ask someone to do something"
"to stand at attention" - used mostly for the military

17) The travel agent advised us not to wait until August. (OK)
