More than one convict ( was . were) sentenced to death.

Should I use" was" or " were" in the sentence?

Thanks

Search the New York Times:

draw the appropriate conclusions, and don't rehash stuff which has been discussed to death in other forums:

Thanks, pal.

When I see both plural form and singular form on the net, it is hard for me to judge which is right.

Notice the word "please" there. It seems to be missing from your vocabulary.
