View Full Version : condition/conditions/situation
1. He is in bad conditions./He is in a bad situation.
"He is in a bad situation" is pretty much the same as "He is in bad conditions.
My Question: Is it so? Are the two sentences correct?
2. This plant loves sunlight and should be placed in an open sunny ____
A) situation
B) position
C) conditions
D) condition [Key: AB]
My Question: If "He is in a bad situation" is pretty much the same as "He is in bad conditions", then what about choice C in question 2?
Many thanks in advance.

1. Only "situation" is correct about persons in this context. We're talking about circumstances of life, not place.
He is in A bad conditioN. [means something different: he's gravely ill/sick
He is in bad shape. [could be financial or health
2. Only "place/position" would be correct here about an object; and I prefer "place." We're talking about place.
Thank you very much.
1. He works in bad conditions.
2. He is in a dangerous situation.
3. Don't put these flowers in _____
Maybe, conditions means something relating to treatment, noises, machines one operates, co-workers one works with etc. while situation means some special occasions one is in?
Could you please spare me a few minutes more on conditions/situation? I find it hard to tell them apart from dictionaries' definitions.

Three words: 'condition', 'situation, 'position' are Countable Nouns
So we could say:
He is in a bad condition (or situation, position)
He is in bad conditions (or situations, positions)
They are the same meaning (single or flural)

1. He works in bad conditions. [Let's say the air quality is poor, there's lots of draft, bad air conditioning
2. He is in a dangerous situation. [Say because he borrowed money from bad people, loan sharks, who're after him; or say because he's fallen in some deep waters and doesn't swim well
