Hello again,
This week Caroline should be sending you a listening exercise. However, she has had a lot of dental surgery done and she has been in a great deal of pain and unable to talk very well for the last few days.
So I'm afraid you've got a listening lesson from me instead. - What I'm afraid really means here in this sentence. Please help. Thanks...

One of my dictionaries says that afraid is an adjective that means filled with...
fear
feelings of aversion
feelings of unwillingness
regret
concernIn your clause, I'm afraid means I am filled with regret that. It seems a bit strong, doesn't it? I don't think your friend is truly so sad. Sometimes when we say I'm afraid, we mean it lightheartedly.

If I say, I'm afraid I have bad news for you, I am being serious. If I say, I'm afraid you got the highest marks on the exam this time, I am being humorous. I think your friend was being humorous, too.
