Some of the known risks of transfusion include threat of infection such as HIV, hepatitis B or C, or CMV. Other, unquantified infectious risks almost certainly exist. There is also a danger of allergic reactions.

I can't find this word in ANY dictionary. :-(
What does it mean?

Some believe risks are probable outcomes. Of course, these outcomes can be named (such as A, B, and C) but they can't be quantified, so this definition is a bit unsatisfactory.

Some believe risks are probabilities. This is satisfactory in many situations, as perhaps in a medical setting, where likelihood of outcomes A, B, and C could be quantified as 25%, 40%, and 35% (if only anyone could be so certain!), and used to inform decision making.

And some believe risks are expected values, which are probabilities multiplied by impact (or the cost of the outcome). Resulting quantification of a $1,000,000 under three risks A, B, and C might be 1% x $1,000,000; 2% x $1,000,000; and 3% x $1,000,000, respectively, or $10,000 + $20,000 + $30,000 = $60,000. This is satisfactory in many situations such as risk analysis, auditing, insurance, and so forth.
