As I know "night" can mean both "evening" and "middle of night" (e.g. 2 a.m.), what does "the night before surgery" mean? : the evening before e.g. 7 p.m.? or the latter?

1) xxx therapy was continued through the morning of surgery (= until the morning?)
2) xxx therapy was discontinued the night before surgery

Thanks in advance :-)
