Is " surprised" an adj?

In the absence of a by phrase naming an agent or a clear, implicit agent from context, we have to presume surprised is an adjective rather than the past participle.
Here surprised is a participle:
She should really have been so surprised by the party because she had no warning.A good case can be made that surprise, here, is a participle in a passive construction:
These events shock me. I am so surprised.
