View Full Version : Indirect object and Wh-question
I try to convert the following sentence to a wh-question replacing both direct and indirect object with wh-pronoun.
Tom gave him a book.
1) What did Tom give him?
The direct object is replaced with "what" and this sentence seems fine.
2) Who(m) did Tom give a book?
The indirect object is replaced with "who(m)" and somebody claims this sentence is not correct.
If they are right, please let me know the reason.
Thank you.

Wh-questions can be formed on every NP object or indirect object that appears in the declarative tree or in the passive trees. A tree family will contain one tree for each of these possible NP complement positions.
Dania asked Beth a question.
Whoi did Dania ask a question?
Whati did Dania ask Beth ?
Whoi was Beth asked a question by ?
Dear Melody,
Thank you for the reply.
So you think the example 2 is correct?

The person was right. Use:
To whom did Tom give a book?
Who(m) did Tom give a book to?
See in published books:
641 on "whom did he give"

Dear Hancu,
So do you think the example 2 is NOT correct?
I can also find examples without "to" in published books.

Post them here, the way I do. Then we talk.

I think (to) is optional, but it's better to have it.

Count the examples without to at my link in the above and they are much less in number. So there.
