Achieve, in brief, has two meaning:
1)to finish something
2)to acquire, get, and accomplish one's goal.

This is the defininition the dictionary gave me. What I am asking is if the first meaning of achieve is similar to the meaning of finish? If not, what is the difference?

From my dictionary: "achieve means to bring to a successful end; to get (sth) by effort; to accomplish some purpose or effect."
Finish, end, complete have similar meanings. Finish work, end an argument, complete a course. Achieve, accomplish say that time and effort have been necessary. Example: They achieved the purpose of their strike. Getting his law degree was a proud achievement.
