If I haveknown/had known/knew that you would take this long, I would have brought it somewhere else. I kept waiting for you which was/is my mistake.
In the above sentence where I have put slashes which tenses should be used and why?
Thank you
Rajesh
1 >If I <strike>have known</strike>/had known/<strike>knew</strike> that you would take this long, I would have brought it somewhere else.
2 >I kept waiting for you which was/<strike>is</strike> my mistake.
Reasons:
1- This is the standard "past unreal conditional" case, which uses past perfect in the "if" clause.
2- Since the statement is still true, I can't really say that "is" sounds wrong, but it is best to have the relative clause in the same past tense as the main clause. The "mistake" was made at the same time as the "waiting".
