Hello teachers!

Would you please help me with this? [This is originally from John's question.] In these sentences, which do the to-infinitives tell us that they happened or that they're ready to happen?

[1] I heard "They forced him to resign, but he didn't" doesn't make sense and it should be "They tried to force him to resign, but he didn't." Is it correct?

[2] How about the following? Do they make sense or not? Please mark with "O" or "X". And, please check if the sentences except for 'but' is correct.

- Part 1
1. His mother got him to let her see what he had done, but he declined/refused it.
2. His early interest in medicine led him to be a chemist/pharmacist, but his parents objected to it, so he couldn't be.
3. His love for nature led him to create a garden of great beauty, but he didn't have money.
4. Despair drove him to kill himself, but he changed his mind [because of, with] his mother's advice.
5. The money enabled him to buy the villa and a new car, but he didn't (buy them) and saved all the money.
6. The inspector/detective compelled him to confess to stealing the book, but he stoutly denied it.
7. Hunger and thirst compelled them to surrender, but they didn't (give up) to the end.
8. He bothered her to show him her [photos as a child, child photos], but she didn't.
9. His supporters persuaded him to return to politics, but he went back to his hometown and enjoyed country life.
10. The king coaxed him to be his subject in return for many prizes, but he rejected it in one word.

- Part 2
1. His boss ordered/told him to stay for the late shift, but he didn't.
2. His boss permitted/allowed him to take off early, but something urgent came up, and he couldn't (do that).
3. I advised him to stay out of that, but he didn't listen to me.
4. His mother encouraged him to see his physician, but he didn't listen to her.
5. The professor encouraged him to study further to become a Ph. D, but he was so poor that he couldn't do that.
6. His father left him to do the work on his own, but he handed it over to his brother.
7. I sent him to pick up [the Japanese guests, the guests from Japan] at the airport, but he didn't meet/see/find them.
8. He (has) taught me to swim for 2 months, but I can't (swim) yet.
9. He (has) taught me how to swim for 2 months, but I don't know yet.

- Part 3
1. He came to know the truth, but he couldn't.
2. He came to find out the truth, but he couldn't.

Thank you very much.
Best regards.
