Hi all,
Could someone please mention the different kinds of pins and clips; e.g. safety pins, paper clips, etc. Appreciated.
Plin.
Hi -- This is about clips. (I'll have to think about pins and come back later.) As you said, there are paper clips. A device that holds bullets for an automatic weapon is a bullet clip or a gun clip. A clip-board clip is built into the clip-board and holds papers onto it. An earring clip clips an earring (not for pierced ears) onto an ear. There are clips in clip-on sunglasses that clip them onto your regular glasses.
In addition to the kind of clip that holds things together, there is the kind of clip that you get when something is cut apart; this is a totally different word. The most common of this type is a film clip, i.e. a small piece of a movie.
Safety pin. Straight pin. Hair pin. Hat pin. Stick pin. Push pin. Part of a lock that detects the indentation of the key. Occasionally, the peg in a stringed musical instrument that holds the end of a string and can be turned for tuning. A belaying pin is used in a ship's rigging of sails. The stick you aim at in the game of quoits (i.e. ring-toss). The pole holding a flag that marks a hole in golf. A cotter pin. You pull the pin of a hand grenade to arm it. You wear a sorority or fraternity pin. Other similar jewelry that is "pinned" onto the clothing: e.g. a diamond pin. A ten-pin is the target in the game of bowling. A duck-pin is similar, but smaller and used with a smaller ball. A rolling pin rolls dough into thin sheets for cooking.
Note: for both pins and clips, I have no idea that my lists are complete. I wouldn't know how to find all the uses of any given word. A good dictionary helps. You might look up the word with Google and see many ways that it is used on line.

Based on you explanation, Pete, we may say that it would be incorrect to call a safety pin a clip even though they both have basically the same shape. Wouln't it? Thanks.

It's too bad we cannot edit messages here. In the posting above I meant to say paper clip.

It is said we should ask if we don't know. Thanks Camilus for replying to my remarks.
