What is the difference in meaning?
1) you must have thought about something else.
and
2) you must have been thinking about something else.

1) you must have thought about something else. [I don't think this would be commonly used. The simple past indicates a specific completed act, and usually "thinking about something" is a process with duration. You might use it in a context like, "The assignment was to think about one of Shakespeare's sonnets; you must have thought about something else."
