Are these sentences correct:

1-Tell me the story about why you are sad.
2-Tell me about why you are sad.

Is there a difference between 2 and:
3-Tell me why you are sad.

Does the "about" change anything?

"Tell me about it" is an invitation to tell all the details related to the matter.
1. seems to ask for details by using "about," but it is unnecessary. "Why" is sufficient to get the same information. 3. is the best sentence.
