Hi,

What is the meaning of the following sentence?

"We shall make mistakes, but they may be angles unawares."

Please note the above sentence is followed by the sentence "If we have true yearning for realization, we must struggle, and through struggle growth will come." (The content is from the book "Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda")

What could be the meaning of "angles unawares"?

Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,
Rakesh.

I'm sorry; I really can't say. Maybe seeing the preceding sentences would give a clue about the antecedent of they in your sentence.

I think that the word angles here is definitely a misspelling of angels. Angels are presumed to be messengers from God or from Heaven; they are mentioned in the Jewish and Christian Bibles.

There is a quote in one very old English translation of the Bible that says that some people who have shown hospitality to strangers have thus "entertained angels unawares". Really, that means that these people have unknowingly entertained angels, but some readers have mistakenly presumed that "unawares" somehow modifies "angels". That leads to quotes like the one you found.
