requested/had requested

Hi, I am having problem with the below:

1. Recently, company ABC requested us to conduct a cleaning program in order to make their office cleaner.

2. Recently, company ABC had requested us to conduct a cleaning program in order to make their office cleaner.


Should I use 1 or 2? Is the had necessary?

Here's my two cents' worth.

#1. I don't think the use of 'had' is appropriate in most cases.
In addition, 'has requested' is somewhat more idiomatic, I think.
