"Having started" is a participial phrase called a "perfect participle". Recall that a participle is a form of a verb that is used to modify a noun like an adjective.

It might be best to compare the perfect participle with the present participle:
The present participle describes someone or something by saying what it is doing now:
- Walking down the street, Pat looked in all the store windows. [Walking tells us what pat was doing at the same time the main part of the sentence takes place.]

- Having walked down the street, Pat was familiar with all the shops in that area. [Having walked tells us something that Pat did prior to the time the main part of the sentence takes place.
