View Full Version : list
Hi,
If I use "list" as a verb meaning slanted or tilted, can we say that it is rarely used, somewhat uncommon but OK to use or should I use other words instead?
Thanks---Plin.

It is common say that a ship lists. You wouldn't say that a ship tilts.
In example 1. you could not replace list with slant or tilt.
In example 4. tilt would be as acceptable as list.
1. He walked with a heavy list to the right, as that leg
was four inches shorter than the other.
2. The ship listed to starboard.
3. The shifting of cargo listed the ship to starboard.
4. Frost had caused the wall to list.
In general, a list is a few degrees off vertical. A slope and a slant are a few degrees off horizontal. A tilt can be either.
