The OED gave a progression of meanings from literal to the one I hear most often. (The sample sentences are my own.):

3a. The view or prospect from a place or point.
- The outlook from that peak is marvelous.
b. A mental view.
- He has a joyful outlook on life.
c. The prospect for the future.
