Hi teachers,

1) Is it correct to say : I put up an umbrella to "cover" my friend so that he won't get wet in the rain. --- I am not sure if the verb "cover" here is correct.

2) When it is raining and I don't have an umbrella and I see someone carrying it, is it correct to say : Can I share the umbrella? ----- IF not, how should I say it?

Thank you very much in advance.

I'd say that the sentences you give sound correct and appropriate.

2. I put the/my umbrella up to ...
3. I raised up the/my umbrella to ...
4. I raised the/my umbrella up to ...

Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance.1. I put up the/my umbrella to cover my friend so that he won't get wet in the rain. [OK. Unless you are already talking about a specific umbrella, use "my".]
2. I put the/my umbrella up to ... [OK. See previous comment.]
3. I raised up the/my umbrella to ... [I would omit "up" altogether. See comment on #1.]
4. I raised the/my umbrella up to ... [Same comment as #3 (and #1).]
