(It's grammatically correct, but it is ambiguous. I don't know if he has more friends than anybody else in his class, or if most of his friends are people in his class).

Sorry, Rusty. I mean "he has more friends than anybody else in his class."

"Tom has three friends, Ed has five, and Jim has six".
"Tom has three friends, Ed has more, and Jim has the most".
…
"Who has the most friends, Tom, Ed, or Jim?" .
"Jim has the most friends among them"
"Jim has the most friends in his class"
"Jim has most of his friends in his class"
Humm.. an interesting question

"Jim has the most friends in his class" = (1) "Jim has the most friends (who are) in his class = (2) "Jim has the most friends (compared to others) in his class." (1) & (2) differ in meaning, therefore the original sentence is ambiguous.
"Jim has most of his friends in his class" = "Of Jim’s friends, most are in his class." ( sentence can only have one meaning and is therefore not ambiguous)
