Hi,

Could someone explain me what is the meaning of the expression 'back on track' in the following sentence?

Octavian Augustus added the role of Pontifex maximus ('chief priest') to all his other jobs to make sure that the gods were back on track.

Thanks in advance,
-Marat

I take this "be back on track" as "be/come back to do gods' duties"

That is probable. "Back on track" means to return to a direction or purpose after a diversion. It's a metaphorical reference to a train derailment, then putting the train back on its tracks.
