-- Check you grammar book or search the Web for terms like:
english gerund grammar esl

-- Briefly, you first look for a verb form ending with "ing". That will be either a gerund or a present participle. Then see how it is used in the sentence. If it is used like a noun (a subject, a direct object, a complement, or the object of a preposition), it is a gerund. Because a gerund is a verb form, it can have an object of its own. It also can have something that acts like a subject; that "subject" is often possessive, but sometimes it is not (for a pronoun, if it is not possessive, it is objective).

-- Here are some examples:
- Walking is my favorite exercise. [Subject.]
- He especially enjoys eating dessert. [Object]
- They will be punished for robbing the bank. [Object of preposition.]
- His downfall was drinking too much liquor. [Predicate nominative = complement.]
