A transitive verb needs an object to make a complete sentence. An intransitive/non-transitive verb does not take an object. Some verbs can be used both ways. Examples:
The clouds moved quickly. (intransitive).
They moved the boxes to the shelves. (transitive).
She watched the boiling pot. (transitive).
I watched while he worked. (intransitive).
He usually sleeps for eight hours. (intransitive).
We read after dinner. (intransitive)
We read magazines in the library. (transitive).
