I am sorry Dan but my dictionary uses
Weekend
Saturday and Sunday:
Let's go away for the weekend.
The bus service is free in the evenings and at weekends.
i just don't get the difference with or without THE...At weekends is an idomatic usage, probably in use in a particular locality. That means that it is not in universal usage, but in some places in the world it is perfectly fine. (I just don't know where...maybe where you live.) I am familiar with the phrase on weekends, meaning the same thing. In weekends, and in the weekend, are very odd expressions. I am sure some poet or author can use the phrases and be brilliant, but not me.
Use the for one occasion. Delete the for repeated occasions. Example: on the weekend, versus on weekends; for the weekend, versus for weekends.
