Dear Teachers,

1.What does all this add up to?
-What does this mean?

2.Each month we add many new articles that will be of benefit to you.
-“will be of benefit to you” means “ that will bring benefit to you’, right?

3.I like her very much, but she barely knows me.
-This means “she completely doesn’t know me”, right?

4.He’s really crazy about her but he’s too afraid to go up to her.
-What does “to go up to her” mean here?

5.A: Have a good exam!
B: the same to you!/ you,too!
-Are these natural?

6.What does “ same here!” mean?

Thanks a lot to Teachers,

Ngamary

1.What does all this add up to?
-What does this mean?
-- The literal use would be in mathematics; you are given a collection of numbers, and the question means, "What is the sum of these numbers?"

The figurative generalization is that you are given a collection of facts, and the question means, "What single conclusion can we draw from these facts?"

2.Each month we add many new articles that will be of benefit to you.
-“will be of benefit to you” means “ that will bring benefit to you’, right? -- Right.

3.I like her very much, but she barely knows me.
-This means “she completely doesn’t know me”, right?
No, it means she knows me just a little, only slightly. I'd guess that she knows who you are and might greet you with "Hello," but you two have never really had any conversations with each other.

4.He’s really crazy about her but he’s too afraid to go up to her.
-What does “to go up to her” mean here?
-- It means to approach her, and by implication, start a conversation with her.

5.A: Have a good exam!
B: the same to you!/ you,too!
-Are these natural? -- Yes.

6.What does “ same here!” mean?
-- It is a response to some statement and means that you agree; you would have been able to make the same statement. If the original statement was about the person who said it, the one who says "same here" could have said the same thing about him/herself.
