"The whole village has been working day and night (in)gathering and threshing this year's crop before the September rains"

The "in" is optional and can be omitted because it will still understood in the sentence.

Hello Liuchunsheng,

The word which is omitted (understood) is "at", not "in". It is correct to say "working at gathering and threshing". It is not correct to say "working in gathering and threshing".

The definition of "at" includes the following uses:

1. engaged or occupied in
2. in the activity or field of
3. used to show a state, condition, or continuous activity

Hi, Harmony:

"work at" and "work on" often exist in various tests, though it seems to be an elementary question,I hope you will explain to me their sentence patterns here.

Best regards
