Should be, "He was in the money." = "He suddenly had a lot of money."

Hi Ofelia,
No, it's an expression that probably comes from gambling circles. To be on the money means to say or do something perfectly. Sometimes for even greater emphasis, we say, "He is/was right on the money."
For example, suppose there is a long meeting where an issue is being discussed, but everyone just keeps repeating their same arguments and no progress is being made towards a resolution. Then Ofelia shares an idea that is very different than anything anyone has said so far. Many people sit up straight, with looks of surprise on their faces. Others know instantly that she is dead on (exactly right) in her thinking. I, knowing genius when I see it, shout out, "Aha! Ofelia is right on the money about this!"
Perhaps it evokes an image of picking the winning horse at the racetrack, but I'm just guessing about that.

Thank you for a very vivid example!:)))
Thank you. I'm glad it helped. :)

Temico this example gives the explanation why my company asks native speakers for answers. Native speakers have the knowledge of idioms and natural speaking that non-native speakers perhaps do not. This is not discrimination. It is common sense and efficient use of company time. There are many ways to achieve correct grammar but for natural speech and the idioms native speakers are the best teachers.
Daya
PS Daya is my surname. I am a male.
Only a stupid lackey, male or female, will not realise that "bud" has not provided proof or evidence to back his claim! And also that "on the money", even if correct, is colloquial and cannot be used in a foreign company's official correspondence and/or transactions!
Insults and statements that are missing the point make no impression on anyone Temico. You gasp and drown in your own bile.
Bud can give the meaning because he is a native speaker. The meaning is clear to him. He knows his own language. He does not need to waste time with proof. You are not a native speaker. You do not know the meaning so must look for the definition. You give your proof but the answer is not correct. This is not a criticism. It is a fact. This is a waste of time for you and a waste of time for Bud when he must correct your answers. If Bud does not check your answer the poster will have incorrect information.
We do not expect you to know the correct answer. You are not a native speaker. Why do you try to compete with native speakers in English teaching? You must have a language of your own. Why do you not teach your own language to people who desire to learn it? Are you so ashamed of your language and your nationality that you must try so hard to prove you can speak English as the native speaker can? This to us seems to be the true lackey mentality. What is your native language? We are making bets here on guessing your age and nationality.
In free time we find amusement to look at your posts. Do you realize that you make the greatest number of your posts for argument and insult? This is amusing but not helpful for learning English. It is less helpful that you often give incorrect answers. How can you say "this kind of sports" is correct? Giving insults is one problem with you. Giving incorrect answers and wasting time for honest posters is another problem. You are doing these things and you expect to be accepted by all. What value do you provide to the members here? This is an honest question. We wait for your honest answer.

That's probably true, but what if someone is talking to a customer and she uses the expression? And what if someone uses English for more than the company's official correspondence and/or transactions?

What's the point of asking me a question when you know that my reply is going to deleted for no reason other than favouritism and hypocrisy that is now prevalent in this forum? Here, "native speakers" are next to "God" and can do no wrong nor make mistakes!!

Really? BTW, my dog's name is also "Daya( =big teeth)" and it's female. ****

Do you have two dogs now Temico? We understand that you have been telling many people that your dog's name is YANKEE.
Some of your old friends are very interested to know what Charlie is doing now. That is your name isn't it? BTW what kind of name is that for a Chinaman? Did your parents like Charlie Chan? :D
We are still waiting for you to answer our question. Is there a reason you don't want to say what your native language is? Are you ashamed to tell us? You DID say Before we answer "Who am I?", we must first learn to be PROUD of our culture, language, heritage, civilisation and NAMES passed on to us by our forefathers!!!!Are you proud of who you are Temico?
"native speakers" are next to "God" and can do no wrong nor make mistakes!!We are very happy to see that you now admit the truth Temico. :D We are surprised it took you so long. Was it not you who said:
Are you trying to teach an American his own language? How would you feel if a foreigner were to try and teach you Chinese, no matter how good he or she may be? I learned a lesson a while back when I was stupid enough to try an correct a simple grammatical mistake made by an Englishman. He blasted back "English is the language spoken by the English, not C****S !!" At first I was astounded and antagonized by this sudden outburst but on second thought, I realised that he was right ABSOLUTELY!! The English can change the way they speak and still call it English ! We CAN'T . After all it is their language. And this:Thank you for taking your precious time to read and to comment about my humble posting. I have read most of the postings in this club and I must say yours were among the best-written. Actually, I was looking forward to learning more from you. From Your postings, I presume that you are not Chinese (Names and nicknames don't prove much). Maybe I am wrong. Anyhow, for the sake of argument, permit me to assume that you are not. I must first clarify that I am Chinese and very proud of my language, culture and heritage. Also that I, with my meagre vocabulary and limited fluency in English, have to choose and check my words carefully, even the simple ones, before I dare write them down. I nevertheless, still make mistakes which I simply cannot avoid, no matter how much I try. There are a few points I like to bring to your attention. First, my avoiding and not contesting HKD's viewpoint, interpretations, assumptions, comments, sentitivities, opinions etc relating to THAT incident, did not necessarily mean that I agreed with him, whether wholly or partially. In fact, I did not and still DON'T! Actually, he missed the whole point of my posting and got carried away by that one single "word". Second, my avoidance was because I did not want to be DRAWN into an out-of-context argument and moreover, he admitted that he had only been acting silly and that it was not his intention to to correct or teach anybody. His admission was enough for the CRUCIAL point in my posting, which is that---We Chinese, should not and cannot teach foreigners their language---. Remember, we Chinese, give "face" to each other and avoid embarrassing ourselves especially in in the presence of FOREIGNERS !! Lastly, HKD only outlined what he interpreted and deduced from that incident in his rather BRASH and UNDIPLOMATIC manner. He is entitled to his viewpoints, sensitivities and opinions, which I respect.I actually wanted this matter closed there and then because this incident was brought up as an illustration to prove a point and not as an excuse to lodge a "cry-baby" complaint as I assume many of you were PRESUMING. In any case, in that incident, there was NO cause for complaint. Not from MY side anyway! All Wise Chinese know that!! Since you have now, raised the subject again, I tell you frankly that I do not totally agree with your viewpoint either, as you seem to have also missed the point. Maybe my inferior English and poor ability to express myself are to blame! However, if you are still interested in my viewpoints, I will try to express them as clearly as I possibly can in my future postings. I have already been reprimanded by a RESPECTED member for being unintelligibe and ANCIENT and I should AGGRAVATE(oops!) her no more !!! Temico
It's time to go back to work. We'll come back later to read your answers to our questions Temico. HA HA HA HA HA !

To Pete,
I guess you don't feel that the deliberate deviation, "language and tone are inappropriate" in this post and therefore need not be deleted, right Pete? I know that if I replied "in kind" to this poor loser you would delete it just like to did to all my previous replies so there is no point in me wasting my time. I hope you realise that your bias is only enhancing that ugly American image despised the world over!!

Ha ha ha...... BTW, would you also like to know how many Americans I screwed? Or is that taboo because they happen to be your masters??
Temico for examples of "deliberate deviation" we can repost any one of the numerous deviant posts you have made on this site.
Then we have the quotes from all the dozens of websites that banned you or kicked you off. Your "friends" in China or Yemen or wherever you live don't like your attitude any more than we do.
Take your own excellent advice (there is no point in wasting my time) and spare yourself the humiliation. :D

Temico Quote #247:
It's typical of POOR LOSERS to resort to unsubstantiated accusations, playing around with words to divert attention from their own mistakes and trying to "put words in the mouths of others", the moment their vile motives are exposed and when they lose out in their absurd arguments and don't want to admit that they are WRONG!!Temico Quote #248:
........ remember it's shameless, identity-less orangutans with "western" slave names like yourself who need to learn "western manners" and not others. There is no need for me to learn "western manners" since I am NOT a "westerner" nor want to be one!!

It's indeed a shame to "Chinadaily" that these....nevermind, are given the task of "moderators" in this forum!! Temico's Farewell post # 17:
Before I say goodbye, I would like to let you know that not all Chinese are little kids with poor English to be tricked or manipulated by ANY FOREIGNERS regardless of "how low they can stoop". Bye-bye from the Middle Kingdom of the Middle East!!!! Temico we can see from your posts on the other sites that you were badly hurt when you were a little boy. The problem is that you are not a little boy now but you still act like one. You have been poisoning yourself with your anger for most of your life. It is very sad to see a man waste his life in this way.
It is easy to see that you have been seeking out English teaching websites so you can prove you are better than those you blame for your pain. Your pain is a sad thing but this is not the place for your pain. We hope you can find the relief without attacking those who have nothing to do with your past life. We are living in the present day. This website should be a joyful place for teaching and learning. I should be a place for celebrating the English language and sharing it with all who wish to learn. You dishonor this website when you use it for your own purposes. That is why we must insist that you leave. Goodbye Temico. We sincerely wish you will be able to find peace in this lifetime.

What happened? Your American masters told you to quit? Or is it because you( I mean all four of you, pretending to be one) are no match for me on a level and unbiased sparring field??
Temico's errors cause problems wherever he goes. They complain about him on websites all over the internet. Here is one example:
From XXXX: You can see none of the above is making sense. Also temico keeps making mistakes all the way. He kind of ‘lied’ that XXXX had “admitted” that the three examples “were in written in the SAME TENSE as the original sentence”, which is not true. In fact, XXXX vigorously rejected it by saying “They are two DIFFERENT things in essence.” Even the corrected sentence in temico’s last message has an error in it. He wrote: "The use of the word "care" offers a CHOICE, and DOES NOT ISSUE a CHALLENGE, like the word "dare". ----What does he mean by saying ‘like the word ‘dare’? Does he mean the word “care” is like “dare”, or does he mean “the use of the word care” is like the “use of the word dare”? or does he mean something else? Why does Temico want to pretend to be a teacher of English? Here are some of the reasons:
ANY IDIOT except those from ORANGUTANS of course, can TELL that I am writng in ENGLISH and not in Latin nor in a sick version from across the Atlantic! Since you claim to have lived in the UK for SEVEN years and had been called "ching chong. . ." you should also be aware of this English saying as well:"English was born in England; got sick in America and died in India!!!"
He spreads his hatred of English speaking countries everywhere he goes:
Chinese know that the ultimate aim of the WESTERN powers is to BRAIN-WASH, DIVIDE and then EXPLOIT other peoples, especially those whom they perceive as future threats to them, by whatever vile methods possible, for their own selfish and conceited interests!!What are you trying to say?? That it is wrong for Chinese people to be "Chinese lover"?? Or are you implying that Chinese people should "cut their noses to spite their faces" and be "boot-lickers" to foreigners like you and your JUHey over here?? If you both are bent on becoming "boot-licking dogs" to America, then at least learn how to bark properly. What you both need is a real Chinese trashing and a good KUNGFU kick to that CAN OF WORMS which you call your heads!!!The problem with Temico is that he does not know where he belongs:From XXXX Re temico: I sense hatred of the US, Canada is an extension of US. Anybody that is seen to come to this part of world is looked upon as unworthy, but he too went to the Middle East. Instead going to a country run by mostly Caucasians, he goes to a country run by the Arabs only.
What do you think Danmahaffey, Pete, and Rusty? Is this enough?
Temico where are your defenders? Oh? You have none? Do you think it might be because you are not wanted here?
