thanksI can't think of a word that fits. Did you hear it rather than read it? If so, possibly "fend" could be the word you are thinking of. It might be used in the situation that you describe, though its meaning is more general: to ward off; to keep off or to keep at a distance.

I found one reference to "fib it off," meaning to push something aside as if it never happened. "To fib somebody off" might mean to get rid of them by telling them something without regard to its truthfulness. That's just a guess.

Hey, I found it

To FOB someone off ~~

to give someone an answer or explanation that is not true or complete, in order to make them stop asking questions or complaining:
I'm tired of being fobbed off.
fob someone off with something: The politicians on the panel just fob off questioners with banal responses.

Suppose I will also use Fib someone off as well in the future. ^^
