Hello,

Why is the following wrong:
I hope that this winter won't be so cold as last.

We are told that (not as+adjective+as)=(not so+adjective+as) e.g:

1.He is not as tall as Tony.= He is not so tall as Tony.

Example: This route is as good as that route. This route is not so good as that route.
"As...as" is now accepted in both positive and negative comparisons.
Example: This route is not as good as that route.

Hello Rusty,
According to your reply the sentence is correct:

1.I hope that it won't be so cold as yesterday.

But I wonder why it said wrong when I chose it from a TOFEL exercise.
I , too, thought it wasn't wrong, I wonder what is your opinion? was the question wrong?:D

I , too, thought it wasn't wrong, I wonder what is your opinion? was the question wrong?:D The information I quoted was from The Random House Dictionary of the English Language, the Unabridged Edition. Perhaps other sources prefer as...as and not so ...as.
