Hola Originalgirl... Bienvenida!
Thanks for bringing this question to my attention.
I think that the types of mistakes that are made depend upon the native language of the speaker.
For example, there are many sources online that list the most common mistakes made by native speakers of English... Here (http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/errors.html) is an example of a very comprehensive list of mistakes made by native speakers.
However, you will find that the types of errors that a person learning English as a second language may make usually depends on that person's native language.
To give you an idea of some areas of grammar to watch out for, I will add a list of some common errors that many speakers of Spanish make when they are learning English. These errors are usually due to the differences in the structure and sound systems of the two languages.
Common Grammatical Errors made by speakers of Spanish learning English
Omission of plural ending (I have some book/I have some books)
Substituting plural for singular (He hit him on the arms./He hit him on the arm.)
Problems using articles:
a American/an American
He no go to library/He doesn't go to the library.
He hurt the his leg/He hurt his leg.
Problems expressing possession:
He hurt its leg./The boy hurt his leg.
the president wife/the president's wife.
Pronouns used redundantly or with wrong number or gender.
That man he knows. That man knows.
He found it (shoes)/He found them.
He (Linda) already went./She already went.
Incorrect placement of adjective and adverbs and problems with the use of the comparative.
inside his house a little white/inside his little white house.
She plays more better./She plays better.
It is more cheaper./It is cheaper.
Problems with verb tense: failure to attach -s ending, incorrect past tense formation, subject and verb do not agree, omission of 'is' in present progressive, omission of auxiliary verbs.
Omission or misuse of prepositions
He went the store./He went to the store.
confusion of 'in' and 'on'
I think that mistakes are generally made where the forms or words in English do not exist in the speaker's native language especially with the smaller 'function' words such as prepositions or helping words.
Also, because of the special way the words "do" and "make" are used in English, they often present a problem for most people learning to speak English.
Here (http://esl.about.com/od/vocabularyreference/a/a_makeordo.htm) is an explanation about when to use "make" or "do".
Hope you will find this response helpful and I wish you mucha suerte with your studies of English.
