View Full Version : Plz correct my diary!!(07/07/07)
Today, I went to Frementale, the city locates west to the Perth city.
Actually I've already been to Freo(Aussie refers to Frementale as Freo) last week. But this time I went to the city with my Korean Friend.
One more was to come but he seemed to have changed his mind, so I didn't have to use any English among my trip.
Frementale was very much different from the Perth city. When I first arrived in Perth about 2weeks ago, I didn't really feel excited because the Perth city didn't seem to be very different from any other cities in the world that I had visited till then. But Freo had harbour, palm trees, markets selling exotic souverniers and fruits that I had never seen in my life. Besides it had lots of attractions for tourists.
So there was no time to get bored. The People from abroad wants to see and they expects some exotic things so Freo was the city that can satisfy those demands.
We went to the harbour which had a cruise ship running between Perth and Frementale, and there was a ship running between Rottnest Island and Frementale. Seeing the ship I thought I am going to work there someday. Because it's amazing that I can make money and I can see all the sceneries in Perth city, Frementale and Rottnest Island at the same time.
And then we went to the market and saw some souverniers and fruits. My friend was more fascinated to the souverniers and fruits than the attractions. So we didn't have enough time to look around some attractions like martime museum or the Frementale prison, but it was a good day anyway.
Especially because I could have perfect Japanese food.

*Don't I need to write the word 'city' after 'perth'? If I'd like to write the word 'city' will I have to attach the article 'the' infront of 'Perth'?
*'The city locates west to the Perth city' Is this expression wrong or Is it because I just wrote it too long?

Today, I went to Frementale, the city locates west to the of Perth city.

*Don't I need to write the word 'city' after 'perth'? If I'd like to write the word 'city' will I have to attach the article 'the' infront of 'Perth'?
-- Generally, you don't need to add the word "city" after the name of a city, and indeed, to do so doesn't sound natural. A few cities do commonly use the word city that way, I think to resolve ambiguity: Mexico City; New York City. If you really don't think that your readers will know that Perth is a city, you could refer to it as the city Perth or the city of Perth.
*'The city locates west to the Perth city' Is this expression wrong or Is it because I just wrote it too long?
-- I did give a shortened form, but your original sentence was not correct. A correction closer to what you wrote is:
- The city is located west of Perth.
Frementale was very much different from the Perth city. When I first arrived in Perth about 2 weeks ago, I didn't really feel excited because the Perth city didn't seem to be very different from any other cities in the world that I had visited till then. *Isn't it usaully said like 'It is very much difficult, It is very much different'?
-- No, the common forms are:
- It is very difficult.
- It is very different.
- It is much different.
You can use "very much" to modify a verb:
- She doesn't like him very much.
You can also use "very much" as a noun phrase, not modifying anything:
- I never eat very much for lunch.
So there was no time to get bored. The People from abroad wants want to see and they expects expect some exotic things, so and Freo was is the city that can satisfy those demands.
*Can't I use an article infront of a Plural noun?
-- You can certainly use an article in front of plural nouns; you would do that when you have specific people in mind. For example:
- I recently met some international student workers at my job; the students from the Philippenes were especially friendly. (Here I have particular people in mind, so I use "the".)
In your sentence, you were referring to people from abroad in general; in that case, you don't use an article.
*Why should I use the comma in the sentence nevertheless there is the conjunction word 'and'?
-- The usual way to punctuate a compound sentence that has a coordinating conjunction between its clauses is to put a comma after the final word of the first clause. If there is no conjunction, you use a semicolon in that place

*Can the word 'scenery' be used as plural form as well?
-- I can't think of any common situation where I would use the plural "sceneries". Some of the on-line dictionaries do list that form as the plural, but I couldn't find a sample sentence using that form. The Cambridge dictionary on line says that scenery is a non-count noun, i.e. you would not use a plural form nor would you say, "a scenery".
There are a lot of hits on the word "sceneries" in Google; most of the ones that I saw refered to a kind of software product (called "a scenery"?) used with the Flight Simulator program.
And then we went to the market and saw some souverniers and fruits. My friend was more fascinated to by the souverniers and fruits than the attractions. *Is it a collocation the phrase 'be fascinated to'?
-- I've never heard "be fascinated to something"; I've always heard, "be fascinated with something.
*Should I use 'the' infront of every museums in the world?
-- It sounds right for all the museums I can think of. For example:
- The Metropolitan Museum of Art
- The Virginia Living Museum (not far from where I live)
- The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History
- The Air and Space Museum
- The Louvre (when you are referring to it in English)
